Come visit the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame Museum or catch a movie showing at the local cinema. Held the second weekend in July annually is Montanas oldest pro-rodeo the Wild Horse Stampede! Vida, Montana makes its home in Eastern Montana on Highway 13, 30 miles north of Circle. The present-day location of Vida began as the Presserville community, and around 1951, Ed Schillinger moved his store and the Vida Post Office to the present-day location on Highway 13. The community finally agreed to change the town name to coincide with the name registered under the Post Office. The new Vida was completed with the move of the last public building, the Baptist Church. Vida had the second radio station in the state! Its call letters were KGCX and were later moved to Wolf Point and then to Sidney. It is also home to Montana sportscaster Rocky Erickson.

Area Attractions

Fort Peck Lake

Fort Peck Lake is Montanas largest body of water at 134 miles in length and a maximum depth of 220 feet. The shoreline spans more than 1,520 miles. Thats longer than the California coast! More than 50 different kinds of fish call this body of water home. In 1933, a 3.8-mile dam was constructed across the Missouri River creating the reservoir. Anglers flock here for the Walleye, Northern Pike, Paddlefish, Sauger, Lake Trout, Small Mouth Bass, and Chinook Salmon. There are several access points and boat ramps. 

Sport Fishing and Local Tournaments

Partake in the national event held in July at Fort Peck known as Montanas Governors Cup Walleye Fishing Tournament. This tournament is Northeast Montanas premier walleye fishing tournament. Another fierce fishing tournament held in this area is the Milk River Catfish Classic. This granddaddy of the catfish tournaments is held annually in June in Glasgow, MT. The night-time event boasts popularity as it books up months in advance. Join the sport and have some fun!

Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge
Between the Missouri River and the Canadian border is the Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge was created in 1935 to provide important breeding grounds and a habitat for migratory birds to break at. Visitors can enjoy wildlife, photography, observation, hunting, fishing, and environmental education. The migratory birds that travel here attract bird watchers from all over. During winter months, ice fishing for Northern Pike is popular in Medicine Lake. 

Charles M Russell National Wildlife Refuge

Known as the CMR Refuge, it surrounds Fort Peck Lake and is managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The Refuge provides over one million acres of public land for fishing, hiking, hunting, camping, bird-watching, and other outdoor activities. If youre looking to observe game in its natural habitat, this refuge shall reward you. It is the second-largest refuge in the continental US. In September and October locals and tourists from all over gather to watch the bull elk bugle and battle for the cows attention. Miles of parked cars can be seen while people sit on lawn chairs and watch for hours the wild display the elk present. Herds of deer, red foxes, and coyotes can also be observed. Bird watchers can delight in spying on mountain bluebirds and black-capped chickadees. Osprey, spotted sandpipers, and white pelicans can be found along the coast of the reservoir.

Removed from the unrelenting fast pace of urban life are the rolling hills of northeast Montanas Sand Creek Bird Sanctuary. This property features lakes, creeks, spring-fed marshes, rolling grassy hills, productive cropland, and extraordinary habitat for pheasants, sharptail grouse, Hungarian partridge, waterfowl, and both whitetail and mule deer. Sand Creek Bird Sanctuary consists of approximately 2,560 acres located 14 miles east of Froid, Montana, and approximately 40 miles west of Williston, North Dakota, with convenient access from all directions. The propertys wildlife prospers due to good nesting and winter cover with food sources located in close proximity to habitat areas. 

Sand Creek Bird Sanctuary contains approximately 1,000 acres of cropland that produce wheat, lentils, canola, and other pulse crops. Although approximately 450 additional acres could be tilled, the owners have chosen to devote most of those acres to wildlife habitat. Approximately 250 acres are under a second ten-year Conservation Reserve Program contract. Those CRP acres feature mature native grasses and forbs for abundant game bird habitat. 

Sand Creek Bird Sanctuarys water resources add both to its beauty and capacity to support large quantities of varied game birds, waterfowl, and deer. One reservoir at full capacity covers approximately 160 surface acres and another reservoir covers approximately 40 surface acres. There also are numerous creeks, spring-fed marshes, and sloughs covered with cattails that offer excellent game bird habitat areas. 

In addition to the natural and carefully nurtured habitat amenities, a 1,600 square foot manufactured home with an attached three-car garage is available to purchase as a fully furnished hunting headquarters. 

For approximately fifteen years the current owners have diligently worked to establish productive game bird and wildlife habitat and have created a unique property that combines both a cornucopia of wildlife and agricultural income.
