Deadmans Basin Reservoir is 20 miles from Harlowton and is 1,849 acres in size. At 3,892 feet in elevation, the reservoir is stocked with Rainbow Trout each year. The reservoir also provides good fishing for Brown Trout, Smallmouth Bass, and Whitefish. It is also popular for winter ice fishing. 

Little Belt Mountains

The Little Belt Mountains are a section of the rugged Rocky Mountains. They lie mostly in the Lewis and Clark National Forest. The unspoiled nature is used for logging and recreation. The mountains have been mined for silver since the 1880s and for sapphires since 1896. The famous Yogo sapphire is mined near Yogo Creek. The highest peak of the range is Big Baldy Mountain towering at 9,175 feet. Ponderosa pines and Douglas-firs predominantly fill the forest providing cover for black bear, elk, white-tailed, and mule deer. Rifle and archery hunting is excellent, and during the fall, hunters orange can be spotted trekking up the trails. The hum of motorized vehicles can often be heard as it is a popular sport here as well. 

Crazy Mountains

The Crazy Mountains are the most prominent in Montana located northwest of Big Timber, Montana. The island range is approximately 30 miles by 15 miles in size and climbs to 7,000 feet in a dramatic transition from prairie to peaks! The highest pinnacle in the range is Crazy Peak at 11,214 feet. Ice, wind, and water sculpted the saw-toothed ridges and created more than 40 jewel-like lakes.

Musselshell River

The Musselshell River is a premier location for the catfish angler. Channel Catfish, Stone Cat, and Black Bullhead swim in these waters. Lack of access makes the river relatively peaceful and untapped. The average Channel Catfish is 6-7 pounds, and the best time to catch one of these whiskered fish is in the spring when they are headed upstream to spawn. Trout can be caught on the west side of Harlowton, and the catfish are best hooked toward the east side of town.

Looking to wet a line and get out in the fresh air? The Harlowton Fishing Access Site consists of 5 acres with the Musselshell River and picnic areas. Other access sites include the Selkirk Fishing Access Site, the Highway Bridge 191 Access, and the Two Dot Road Access Site.

Trails

Hailstone National Wildlife Refuge

Hailstone National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1942 as a resting point and breeding ground for migratory waterfowl. It also provides a habitat for pronghorn and prairie dogs. The Refuge is open to hunting of migratory birds, upland game birds, and big game. 

Crazy Mountains

The Crazy Mountains are the most prominent in Montana located northwest of Big Timber, Montana. The island range is approximately 30 miles by 15 miles in size and climbs to 7,000 feet in a dramatic transition from prairie to peaks! The highest pinnacle in the range is Crazy Peak at 11,214 feet. Musselshell River

The Musselshell River is a premier location for the catfish angler. Channel Catfish, Stone Cat, and Black Bullhead swim in these waters. Lack of access makes the river relatively peaceful and untapped. The average Channel Catfish is 6-7 pounds, and the best time to catch one of these whiskered fish is in the spring when they are headed upstream to spawn. Trout can be caught on the west side of Harlowton, and the catfish are best hooked toward the east side of town.

Looking to wet a line and get out in the fresh air? The Harlowton Fishing Access Site consists of 5 acres with the Musselshell River and picnic areas. Other access sites include the Selkirk Fishing Access Site, the Highway Bridge 191 Access, and the Two Dot Road Access Site.

At the front door entry, the stairway leads to the second floor which offers five mixed-use rooms. There are two large bathrooms all with tiled floors and walk-in showers. One bedroom suite has an outdoor deck area that overlooks the river with the Beartooth Mountains as the backdrop. All the flooring on the second level with the exception of the bathrooms and the bonus room are a high quality wool carpet. The newly finished back bonus room provides additional space for guests, or it can be used as a multipurpose room with space for a workout equipment, or a designated kids play area.

The lower level of the home is 2,424 sq ft and fully finished with its own kitchen and living room that would be a great space for a pool table and bar featuring 10 ft ceilings and a convenient sliding glass door that leads directly to the backyard. There are also two very impressive bedrooms both with large walk-in closets, and one full bathroom. One bedroom suite has its own private sliding glass door leading to a covered backyard patio. The utility room can also be found on the lower level.

OUTDOOR IMPROVEMENTS
Constructed to absorb 180 degree views of Montana mountains and rivers, the outdoor area and the backyard will truly take your breath away. Alfresco dining can be enjoyed from the back patio with room for outdoor furniture thats complete with an impressive built in grill. Also on the patio you will find a new Caldera Spas hot tub, that can comfortably seat 7 people and contains an impressive 38 jets for pure relaxation in a one-of-a-kind setting. A value of $70,000 worth of new landscaping improvements were added to the front and back yards which were both reseeded to enhanced the enjoyment and made the house look and feel like a home. Additionally, the concrete parkway for the two-car garage was extended significantly to around the west side of the house with an accompanying impressive rock retaining wall. Similarly to the home, the outdoor equine improvements are top quality and newly finished. The equine enthusiast will appreciate the three steel pipe fenced corrals each with their own shelter sheds that were finished in 2022. Just above the pens and hay meadows sits a 35 acre pasture that has a natural spring for reliable water. The perimeter fence around the property is also new, and ready to support livestock immediately.

Irrigation: Approximately 35 acres are flood irrigated by brand new gated pipe, plus the headgate for the irrigation ditch was rebuilt in 2022.

Shop Pad: Adjacent to the home sits a 45 ft x 60 ft concrete slab with plumbing stubs and in-floor radiant heat tubing. The concrete is a 6 inch slab of 6,000 psi concrete with thicker pours under the areas designed for hydraulic vehicle lifts and a concrete gun room. River BBQ Pad: At the banks of the Rosebud Creek you will find a concrete pad perfectly situated to soak up everything the water has to offer. Recreation: 
FISHING
With almost 1 mile of private access to the exceptional small water fishery of the East Rosebud Creek, all fishermen will appreciate the opportunity right outside their backdoor. Rainbow and brown trout can frequently be caught, averaging 8-12 inches in length. Larger brown trout in excess of 16 inches have been caught on occasion, especially in the fall when they are spawning nearby.

WILDLIFE/HUNTING OPPORTUNITIES
The rich riparian area creates a thriving habitat for waterfowl and upland birds alike. Turkeys can be reliably found immediately upon entering the property while eagles, sandhill cranes, ducks and geese are all frequent flyers at the East Rosebud Retreat. As for big game animals, you will often see a sizable elk herd with a mixture of white-tailed deer, as well as moose, black bears, coyotes, and foxes. While they arent commonly seen here, there has been a wolf sighting on this very property. Additionally, the river habitat is home to varying smaller critters such as beavers and rock chucks. MOREL MUSHROOMS
The morel mushroom, a Montana staple, can be found in the river bottom and riparian areas of the East Rosebud Retreat. GENERAL OPERATIONS
The property contains roughly 35 acres of irrigated, high producing grass hay meadows. With brand new gated pipe recently installed, every drop of water can be used with ease of operation in mind. The headgate for the irrigation ditch was just recently renovated which will appease any seasoned or new operator. Just above the hay meadows sits a 35 acre pasture that contains a natural spring that provides a reliable water source for grazing livestock. Just below the gravel driveway, in the riparian area filled with billowing Cottonwood trees, sits a new and improved 10 grazeable meadow. The removal of deadfall and overgrown forage has created an ideal environment for native grasses now to thrive. This area was leased to a neighbor which held 15 cow/calf pairs for 45 days in the summer months.

2023 property taxes were $6,872.56.

Located at the upstream end of the Stillwater River Canyon, the Flying C Ranch operates on just over 10,700 acres, of which 8,880 is deeded, and the balance is encompassed in two BLM permits and a state lease. The ranch benefits from a 100-head grazing permit on the adjacent national forest. The ranch headquarters and the owners compound are situated along one-and-a-half miles of the Stillwater River. This river unit consists of around 300 acres, including 59 acres of flood-irrigated hay meadows, the aforementioned owners home, the managers home, a classic horse barn, guest houses, and other outbuildings. 

The ranch rises steeply from there to include dramatic foothills that open into rolling grasslands running to the national forest boundary. Tucked away amongst these scenic foothills are significant portions of two other lush valleys through which flow Bad Canyon Creek and Trout Creek. The latter offers an appealing small trout fishery that complements the ranchs frontage on the Stillwater River, the area's dominant, highly regarded big stream fishery. As one would expect, wildlife is prolific as there is a desirable and very private habitat for everything from species of deer to elk, antelope, black bear, and mountain lion. Also, the canyons and grassy hillsides are ideal for upland birds and raptors. The lower valley offers an intimate experience with views of dramatic cliffs, and as one gains altitude, the entire Beartooth Front comes into view and is truly awe-inspiring from these vantage points. 

The ranch supports 225 cows and carries over the calves with supplemental hay purchases. From imposing cliffs, rivers, and streams to dramatic canyons, secret coulees and private valleys, and timbered and aspen-covered slopes, the Flying C Ranch operates in an amazingly diverse and wildlife-rich landscape. Many have said it is like owning a national park.

Local Area

Basically, it is a wild and wooly time that is Montanas version of the Running of the Bulls! Additionally, there is a Yellowstone River Boat Float held annually in July. The Corps of Discovery came through the area of Big Timber, Montana in 1806 led by Captain William Clark. In 1883, the Northern Pacific Railroad came through the area prompting the construction of a railroad station giving way for the town of Big Timber. The town was named for the large Cottonwood trees growing along the Boulder and Yellowstone rivers that converge here. In 1880, two Irishmen, Charles McDonnell and Edward Veasey drove 3,000 head of sheep from California to Montana. Sheep and cattle ranching became a major industry in the area. In 1901, the first woolen mill in Montana was built in Big Timber. While farming and ranching predominately support the economy, platinum/palladium mining is also a major contributor. Big Timber is also the gateway to the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness.

The Crazy Mountains are the most prominent in Montana located northwest of Big Timber, Montana. The island range is approximately 30 miles by 15 miles in size and climbs to 7,000 feet in a dramatic transition from prairie to peaks! The highest pinnacle in the range is Crazy Peak at 11,214 feet. Ice, wind, and water sculpted the saw-toothed ridges and created more than 40 jewel-like lakes 

Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness

The Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness spans 943,648 acres along the Montana and Wyoming border. The forest covers the juncture of two mountain ranges, the Beartooth and the Absaroka Mountains. Hunting

The property itself sees a great deal of big game to offer hunting opportunities. However, they dont end there. The Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains provide exceptional hunting. Hunt game such as bighorn sheep, elk, deer, mountain goat, wolf, black bear, turkey, and antelope. A standard over-the-counter license will get you a shot at some amazing mule and white-tailed deer. But to hunt the big guys, you will need a special permit and get drawn for a tag. 20 tags are drawn for elk either sex or 75 for antelope either sex. This event brings in hundreds of Montana-bred woolies that take off charging down six blocks of the main street in Reed Point, Montana. Vendors are set up with a parade and a street dance as part of the festivities!

Grab your gear and an oar and get in the water! The float begins at Livingston and then retraces the route of William Clark of the explorers Lewis and Clark. The float continues for a historical three days of camping and then ends in Columbus.

Anglers are not crowded with others and have the length of the river to spread out. The beautiful landscape encompassing the banks enhances the whole experience. Dry fly fishing is excellent as well as sub-surface fishing with nymphs and streamers. 

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park is a short drive away where you can catch a glimpse of the rarely-seen grizzly and wolf at the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center. Visit geysers and the historic Old Faithful for sights that you will never forget. Get a taste of the wild, see where the wildlife roams, and enjoy all the amenities of a national park!

The Yellowstone River Boat Float

Grab your gear and an oar and get in the water! The float begins at Livingston and then retraces the route of William Clark of the explorers Lewis and Clark. The float continues for a historical three days of camping and then ends in Columbus. 

Red Lodge Mountain

One of Montanas best ski resorts, Red Lodge Mountain has short lift lines and reasonably priced lift tickets making it more appealing than others in the state. The mountain offers over 1,600 acres frequently dusted with fresh, untouched powder. Take some lessons, grab rentals, or dine at the main lodges cafeteria. There is something for everyone at this winter wonderland.

Located just one mile from the charming town of Fishtail, Beartooth Overlook offers breathtaking views of one of Montana's most spectacular and untamed landscapes while providing meaningful agricultural production and recreational opportunities. The ranch comprises diverse topography, including native stream bottom and rolling bluffs overlooking the West Rosebud River drainage and the Beartooth Range beyond.

Water is plentiful on this well-rounded ranch, with nearly a half mile of Fishtail Creek fishery flowing through mature cottonwood galleries and an extensive ditch system meandering through the center of the property. Additionally, a nearly 1 acre spring-fed trout pond frames the building site of a future lodge or fishing cabin.

With approximately 250 acres of flood-irrigated hay fields and the balance of the acreage in native upland and riparian pastures, the ranch consistently supports in excess of 100 cow/calf pairs year-round. A convenient ranch compound consisting of two modest ranch homes, a shop, and corrals supports ranch operations in a bucolic homestead setting. Opportunities exist to enhance agricultural operations with expanding stock water developments and modernizing irrigation or continuing the traditional operations of this low-overhead ranch.

A thoughtful conservation easement with Montana Land Reliance is in place on the ranch, allowing the construction of an additional main residence on one of the most spectacular building sites along the Beartooth front.
